Having made the leap across to Belgium in 2010, and nearing the end of my first season abroad, it was time to consider my options. I had been in contact with a number of teams and had a few options. Ultimately I had to choose who I thought would be the best fit for me. A week or so before the end of the season, WSC Hand in Hand Baal manager Guido Helsen, drove halfway across the country to meet me. We sat down for a good hour or so, and I liked what he had to say. I took a couple of days to think about things, I don't know why, as it seemed such a logical move. A few days later, the deal was done.
Guido was a top rider in his day, and has nearly 40 years experience of the sport. He is exactly the kind of person I need to help me get the best from myself. RIders he has previously looked after include Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack), need I say more! I will be living in his apartment in Westmeerbeek, in the Antwerp region. I'll be in the company of a couple of English riders, Mike Gregg and Joel Davison. I don't know about Joel, but I know it is Mike's first year in Belgium, so it'll be interesting seeing how he gets on.
The team itself is a big club, with sections through all ages, but importantly for me the elite/u23 section is part of the Beker van Belgie (Cup of Belgium), and gets invites to a number of the other interclub races, as well as a couple of local pro races. It's a step up,and exactly where I need to be. Click on the kit, above left, to be taken to their website, be warned, you will need to mute the sound! On the right hand menu, scroll down a little and you'll see the music player toolbar.
In addition to this I will also be guesting for an English based team, WyndyMilla Test Team, in a few of the Premier Calendar series races at home, as well as the National Championships.
WyndyMilla Bespoke Cycling is british cyclings home of custom cool, 'new skool' bikes and bling and a one stop 'go faster' shop. Click on me to go to their website. As well as getting me in the Premier Calendars, Henry and the gang are also getting me fine tuned with the aid of their combined expertise. Physiological testing at the Surrey Sports Park to track my condition. A custom fit race bike equipped with Sram wheels and components. Bont Vaypor shoes with custom Sidas footbeds. Nutritional know how and Maxifuel products. As well as a sojourn to Lanzarote in January for some good quality training on pristine roads with glorious weather. The snow is falling here right now, so a fortnight in Lanzarote cannot be overlooked in its significance! Essentially, with WyndyMilla on my side, no stone will be left unturned.
